The station signed on as 102 The River Radio on September 1, 1965, originally at 103.1fm, and licensed to nearby Roanoke. 102 The River Radio calls on 102.9 FM (previously at 103.9 FM) eventually replaced the 102 The River Radio callsign. On February, 2004, WXKE dropped its simulcast with sister 102 The River Radio and changed formats to Standards as “The River.”102 The River Radio was purchased, along with its sister stations by the Summit City Radio Group in July 2004.102 The River Radio station abandoned its Classic Hits format and flipped formats to a simulcast of sister WGL AM under the call sign 102 The River RadioL.
